ton mile
A unit of measure equal to the movement of one ton of railroad lading for a distance of one mile. (DOE6) (FRA3)
One ton (2,000 pounds) transported one statue mile (5,280). Ton-miles are computed by multiplying the aircraft miles flown on each inter-airport hop by the number of tons carried on that hop. (BTS5) (BTS6)
(See also Average Length of Haul) One ton moved one mile. (AIA1)
A measurement used in the economics of transportation to designate one ton being moved one mile. This is useful to the shipper because it includes the distance to move a commodity in the calculation.
