Switching Service

A railway service performed under yard rules and regulations. It may involve the classification of cars according to commodity and destination; the assembling of cars for train movement; changing the position of cars for purposes of loading, unloading, and weighing; the placing of locomotives and cars for repair and storage; and the moving of equipment in connection with the carrier's work service not constituting a road movement. (AAR1)
