Instrument Approach
A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing, or to a point from which a landing may be made visually. An instrument approach is prescribed and approved for a specific airport by competent authority Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 91. (FAA14)
An approach to an airport, with intent to land, by an aircraft flying in accordance with an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight plan, when the visibility is less than 3 miles and/or when the ceiling is at or below the minimum initial altitude. (FAA2)
