Gross Tonnage
The gross tonnage of a vessel is the internal cubic capacity of all spaces in and on the vessel which is permanently enclosed, with the exception of certain permissible exemptions. It is expressed in tons of 100 cubic feet. (USCG4)
Applies to vessels, not to cargo. Determined by dividing by 100 the contents, in cubic feet, of the vessel's closed-in spaces. A vessel ton is 100 cubic feet.
