Commuter Railroad

Those portions of mainline railroad (not electric railway) transportation operations which encompass urban passenger train service for local travel between a central city and adjacent suburbs. Commuter railroad service using both locomotive hauled and self-propelled railroad passenger cars is characterized by multi-trip tickets, specific station-to-station fares, and usually only one or two stations in the central business district.
